Or arrived home before realizing you forgot to pick up your prescription, return a package, or grab the documents you needed from the office? We’ve all been there. It’s not because we don’t use reminder apps—it’s because most reminder apps are built around time, while many of our daily tasks are tied to locations. That simple frustration sparked the idea behind Pingaroo. The Challenge Traditional reminder applications are excellent at reminding users when to do something. However, many real-world tasks don’t happen at a specific time. You might stop by the grocery store after work one day, visit the hardware store over the weekend, or pass the pharmacy while running errands. Scheduling reminders around uncertain times often results in notifications that arrive too early, too late, or after the opportunity has already passed. The challenge was clear: build a reminder system that works around places instead of schedules. The Solution Pingaroo is a location-based reminder application available on iOS and Android that automatically reminds users when they arrive at places that matter. Instead of asking “When should I remind you?”, Pingaroo asks a much more practical question: “Where should I remind you?” Whether it’s a shopping list, work supplies, personal errands, or everyday to-do lists, Pingaroo quietly monitors your saved locations and delivers reminders exactly when they’re most relevant. The result is a smarter and more natural way to stay organized. Designing for Everyday Life One of the primary goals during development was to create an application that feels effortless to use. Most people don’t plan errands down to the minute. They simply complete tasks whenever they happen to be nearby. With that in mind, Pingaroo was designed to fit naturally into everyday routines instead of forcing users to manage complicated schedules. Creating a reminder only takes a few moments: Create a reminder list. Add the items you don’t want to forget. Select one or multiple locations. Let Pingaroo take care of the rest. Once configured, reminders appear automatically whenever the user reaches the selected destination. Behind the Development Although Pingaroo appears simple on the surface, building a reliable location-aware reminder system presented several interesting technical challenges. The application relies heavily on geofencing, background processing, local notifications, and efficient location monitoring while maintaining minimal battery usage. Developing these capabilities required balancing performance, reliability, and user privacy to ensure reminders continue working even when the application isn’t actively open. The project also provided an opportunity to further explore modern mobile development using SwiftUI, native location services, and cross-platform development practices. Privacy First Location-based applications naturally require users to place trust in how their information is handled. For that reason, privacy was treated as a core design principle from the beginning. Pingaroo does not require users to create an account, upload their reminder lists, or share unnecessary personal information. Your reminders remain yours, while location services are used solely to determine when a reminder should be triggered. Continuous Improvements Like every project at ITners, Pingaroo continues to evolve. Regular updates introduce new features, improve performance, and refine the overall user experience based on real-world usage and user feedback. As new ideas emerge, the application will continue growing while remaining true to its original objective: making everyday reminders smarter, simpler, and more useful.
